Setting up a website - not as easy as you may think!

Setting up a website is harder than I first thought!  For that reason I've decided to write this blog, to share my experience and hopefully stop others making the same mistakes.

Starting out I debated whether to employ a company to build and manage a website on my behalf.  I decided this was a learning opportunity and with all the website hosting/builders available it would be a breeze.  I am not ashamed to admit its been hard and sometimes confusing work.

Websites are not just about content, I wrongly believed that I would purchase my domain, sign up to a website building package, add content then publish - then by some magic it would appear on search engines like Google and Bing.  It didn't!!!

This is when I was introduced to the world of SEO (search engine optimisation).  For a few days I read endless articles explaining; <h1>  tags and their importance for SEO, search engines cannot read images and they needed alt tags.  Thankfully Fasthosts have a "widget" to add the <h1> title and there was no need to write the code (phew!).   Adding the alt tags to my images was easy I searched alt tag and copy/pasted changing the "title".

However I had already organised my pages and published my site.  I'm not a huge fan of rework (not very lean) however we learn from our mistakes!!  My site is published and complete with <h1> tags and some <h2>, and <h3> where required.  This should now mean that search sites can "crawl" and understand my site contents.

SEO can be done easily when you know how!!!
